Hi all! I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to respond to all the
inquiries yesterday pertaining to using egg whites. I worked
essentially all day!
Using egg whites DOES sound strange!! I first heard about it a couple
years ago, and totally called it off as idiotic without reading into
it. I recently kept hearing about it on TTC forums, and decided to do
my own research before deciding whether or not to attempt it myself.
And even after I was assured it was safe, it was so weird that I
honestly held off a couple cycles just because....well, who would ever
dream of putting egg in your vagina???
So essentially, the idea behind using egg whites is the same as using
PreSeed or Conceive Plus brand luricants: it mimics fertile cervical
mucus, and helps the little guys swim and get where they need to go.
But instead of the lubes, it's provided by nature, contains proteins,
and can even be organic, or depending on your morals, from free-range
chickens!
Real egg whites (I actually purchased a container of liquid egg
whites. NOT imitation!) brought to room temperature is what you want
to use. Cover the container you're letting it warm up in...you don't
want a chance of dust or tiny bugs or anything at all contaminating
these egg whites!! You only need to use a small amount, especially if
using an Instead Cup.
Then you can insert a small amount (depending on if you're naturally
dry or moist, 1-3mL) using an oral syringe, either before or after
inserting the sperm donation. I used the Instead Cup, and so put the
donation into the cup, then sucked up about 1.5mL of the egg white
with the same syringe...that also helps avoid "wasting" the semen that
gets caught in the tip of the syringe) and put it right into the cup
along with the semen.
You don't need to just believe me though. If you google it, you can
find tons and tons of both reliable sites and TTC forums discussing
the use of both egg whites and Instead Cups.
(And no, you cannot get salmonella poisoning through your
vagina...research on this very subject has shown that the bacteria
cannot be properly absorbed through the vagina.)
I have read there IS a small risk of general infection. However, it's
a typical risk, not like playing Russian Roulette. You can also get an
infection from sex, from the donor sperm, or even your own fingers.
I was a little skeeved out by this whole idea, but now am very, very
happy that I tried it!
Good luck to all of you!!!
