There haven't been any proper studies on effectiveness of syringe vs instead cup; at least none that I know of, for AI. However, my understanding of the two methods and insemination in general makes me believe that the instead cup method should offer a slightly higher success rate compared to syringe, and I know others have come to the same conclusion so I don't think it's just my own flawed logic saying that. This is due to the donation staying closer to the crevix, being used sooner (no wait for donation to liquify), and less sperm lost when transfering the donation (a little bit of sperm will be left in the cup using a syringe, but if a donor donates directly into the instead cup you can be certain the full donation gets where it's suppose to be). So I would say that instead cup is probably a better option. However, any difference would be very minor, so ultimately I would suggest doing what is comfortable for you. Some women find
that the instead up is uncomfortable when inserted and so prefer to stick to syringe as a more comfortable alternative. I would test both out, but if instead cup proves uncomfortable you should feel fine switching to syringe method instead. The 'turkey baster' is usually used jokingly, no one is actually going to use a turkey baster for a donation. Despite what some donors will try to claim, I don't think any of them are producing at such large quantities to need a turkey baster to transfer it all .
I would note if you use the instead cup method your want to practice before the actual insemination date. Your want to be able to safely and easily insert the instead cup wihtout any 'leak'. This isn't too hard to do with some practice, but make sure you know how to do it before the day you do the insemination. The link provided by the moderators goes into more detail about how the methods can be done and will be a great place to get any details.
Once again any difference between the donation types is mostly negligable, so choose whatever your comfortable with.

People definitely did used to use turkey basters btw, and it wouldn't
surprise me if some people still do.
